Start with the workload, not the plan name
List the application runtime, expected concurrent work, data size and peak periods. A small brochure site, a transactional store and a database server create different pressure even at similar visitor counts. Measure the current workload where possible.
Size virtual CPU and memory together
CPU supports concurrent computation while memory keeps active processes and cached data available. Review sustained utilization, queueing and out-of-memory events. Leave operating headroom for updates, backups and traffic spikes.
Choose storage by capacity and I/O pattern
Estimate live data, logs, backups and growth separately. Databases and busy applications benefit from low-latency storage; archives may value capacity more. Confirm whether backup space is included or separate.
Validate transfer, operating system and recovery
Estimate monthly transfer from payload size and request volume. Confirm Linux or Windows compatibility, licensing, administrative access, monitoring responsibility and a tested restore procedure before production.
Worked example: estimate memory before selecting a tier
Suppose an application uses 2 GB of working memory, its database uses 1 GB, and the operating system and supporting processes use another 1 GB. That is already 4 GB before peak requests, deployment jobs or backups. A 4 GB plan would have no measured headroom. Test the next available capacity against representative traffic instead of treating this illustration as a universal recommendation.
Record baseline and peak CPU, active memory, disk growth, I/O latency and transfer over a representative period. After deployment, compare actual measurements with the estimate. Persistent memory pressure calls for capacity or application changes; high CPU during one scheduled task may call for scheduling changes instead.
